A Place to Grow Acorns

Maya 3d Model

For "A Place To Grow", the game I worked on for VIST 205, I made all the character models and their respective props. For this class they highly encouraged us to only make one to two characters to stay in scope, however we were able to get away with three because all we did is change their hats to make 3 different characters. For Nutty Joe, his hat is simple a basic because he is the main character. For Cherry, her hat has leaves that resemble a bow to show that she is a girl acorn. For Oakley, his hat covers his face like a emo hairstyle because he is the youngest of the acorns so we wanted him to have some teenage angst.

To create the acorns, I first started by making the acorn shape using a cube that I added several loop cuts. I circularized the top to make a cylinder and then I played around with the shape to make it acorn like. after I got that down I then pulled up the reference sheets provided by Jenna Hight. This helped me make sure the acorn had the right tilt and correct shape. I was also then able to make eyes by looking at where they were placed in the reference sheet. My next step was to make the arms and Legs by making the cylinders again from the cubes. In order to help rig, I added knee and elbow topology to help it bend better. We decided not to directly attach the arms and legs to the model because it would help with a lot of the animations considering the acorns can't fully reach things without moving where the shoulder is because of how big and round their body is.

Making the hats was a similar process to the acorn shape, however each time I had to add each acorn's unique detail. I used Jenna's reference sheet again.
